Fashion trends come and go over time and are influenced by politics, the economy, celebrities, music and much more. With NY Fashion week around the corner I thought a recap of fashion trends through the decades would be fun!
The 60’s saw a lot of racial and political upheaveal and this gave way to the hippie culture. Hippies brought along loose flowing clothing and headbands . Emilio Pucci introduced the world to psychedelic prints and women went mad for mod fashion. Shift dresses in bright colors, tights and the ever famous go go boots came into play. What a fun fashion era!
The 70’s rolled in with bell bottoms and the disco era emerged. Who can forget John Travolta’s iconic white suit! Women wore tighter clothing and platform shoes elevated everyone to a higher level. During this era the punk movement also emerged with combat boots, mohawks and spiked leather. Punk rockers were the antithesis of disco.
The 80’s were bright with neon colors, leggings and oversized sweatshirts. Madonna influenced women to display their bras and layer lots and lots of necklaces and rubber bracelets. While working women wore jackets with large shoulder pads and groups like Run DMC influenced a sneaker revolution. The late 80’s saw acid wash denim come into play and the movie Flashdance made dance clothes and legwarmers all the rage!
The 90’s were influenced by the grunge movement where greasy hair and jeans paired with concert tees were the in trend. Women wore really BIG hair and platform shoes went chunky. Hip Hop music became more mainstream and jeans became baggier. In 1995 the movie Clueless inspired many new trends that put costume designer Mona May on the map. The Rachel hair cut was the most requested hairstyle of the time!
The first decade of the 21st century didn’t evolve new trends but more of a recycling of past trends. Grunge sort of took a turn into Gothic. Trucker hats, destroyed denim and vintage clothing were the cool things to wear. Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Paris Hilton and the Olsen twins became fashion inspirations. Who can forget JLO in the green low plunging dress? The world was also introduced to low rise jeans and Uggs.
Feeling a bit nostalgic? I’d love to hear your choice for best fashion trend of all time? Are there any trends you wore that would make you cringe now? Looking forward to reading your choices in comment section below!
