This week the world is mourning the loss of a musical genius. He was adored and admired by millions but beyond his influence on music he was a style icon. His style was gender bending and included ruffles, lace, heels and lots and lots of purple. I loved his fearless sense of style and risk. His most iconic look was in Purple Rain where he wore a purple Edwardian like jacket, the famous ruffled shirt and the stacked heeled boots. Women all swooned at his sexiness all while wearing feminine attire.
Another famously shocking look was the yellow backless jumpsuit he wore to the 1991 VMA’s. Jaws dropped as he pranced on stage all the while he clearly was paving the way for the outrageous red carpet fashions of today.
For his 2004 induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame he wore a black and red pin striped suit and the red fedora.
He loved to don the same color from head to toe. He had his heels custom made to match the color of his pants, most speculate to help create an illusion of height. At the 2005 Peoples Choice Awards he wore white pants and a matching hooded jacket.
His performance at the 2007 half time show was unforgettable and set a new standard for future half time performers. He wore a turquoise colored suit with orange shirt and who can forget the black turban. He ignited that night with an electrifying performance.
At the 2015 American Music Awards he went for gold and yellow, an afro and the famous third eye sunnies. This was an older Prince who still had a penchant for heels, crop tops and skin tight silhouettes.
I’m a huge Prince fan and have collected every single CD. I was lucky to have seen him perform in New York City a few times. His performance at Madison Square Garden was a magical experience and one that I will never forget. I also saw him at the legendary Palladium where I was standing a couple of rows from the stage. I was captivated and memorized by his guitar skills. Prince pushed the boundaries of sexuality and fashion, he will be truly missed.
I’d love to hear all about your fond memories of Prince, your favorite song or favorite look.
