One of my goals is to highlight women entrepreneurs and groundbreakers. As New York fashion week came to an end and with Paris fashion week now in full swing, I noticed a growing trend, Dominican fashion models on the catwalk. It thrills me to see more and more diversity in the fashion world.
I specifically want to highlight Lineisy Montero as a new face that emerged on the Spring/Summer 16 shows. She is a 19 year old Dominican model that has been featured in over 50 shows since mid-September. She features a short afro which is in sharp contrast to the usual tresses featured in fashion shows. She was featured in Teen Vogue in August where she stated “I just like being me”. She’s a great role model for our youth to accept themselves and not to conform to the “norms” of society.
I’ve focused on Lineisy but there were so many Dominican models hitting the runways this year. To name a few that were also featured : Ysaunny Brito, Giselle Marte, and Arlenis Sosa. I have a feeling we will see more of these models in the coming year.
Its truly wonderful to see the fashion world embrace and grow in diversity, especially on the catwalks. I know we still have a long way to go but its refreshing to see the move away from “cookie cutter” models.
